Shakedown Hawaii is the 16-bit sequel to Retro City Rampage

Shakedown Hawaii is the new project from Vblank Entertainment, taking the world of Retro City Rampage into the 16-bit future, the studio announced today.

The game takes place 30 years after Retro City Rampage, with that game's protagonist, The Player, coming "out of early retirement to rebuild his neglected corporate empire," said developer Brian Provinciano in a PlayStation Blog post. Retro City Rampage was an 8-bit take on Grand Theft Auto that parodied classic arcade games and pop culture from the '80s and '90s, and Shakedown Hawaii looks similar in its debut trailer, which you can watch above.

Along with 16-bit visuals, Shakedown Hawaii will offer destructible environments in its open world, plus "an arsenal of supercharged weapons." It also seems like it will serve as another send-up of video games: The title evokes Dennaton Games' Hotline Miami series, and Vblank announced the game with a poster (see below) that pays homage to the Max Payne 3 cover from Game Informer's July 2009 issue.

Shakedown Hawaii is in development on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and Windows PC, and Vblank said on Twitter that the game is also "definitely coming to at least one Nintendo platform." Asked for further details, Provinciano told Polygon that while he could not confirm additional platforms at this time, Shakedown Hawaii "will most likely hit Mac and Linux in addition to [Windows] PC." He said he is targeting a Nintendo 3DS version as well, and is waiting for information on the Nintendo NX before deciding on whether to bring the game to a Nintendo console.

Responding to comments on Retro City Rampage's Facebook page asking about other platforms for Shakedown Hawaii, like Xbox consoles, Provinciano said, "I'm not over committing to launch platforms this time, as the focus took away from polishing [Retro City Rampage] to where I wanted it for launch." Although PC, PS4 and Vita are Shakedown Hawaii's only confirmed platforms so far, and the game was announced on the PlayStation Blog, Provinciano said on Facebook that "no platform has given me money for any kind of exclusivity."

As for a launch window, Provinciano told Polygon that Shakedown Hawaii's release date is "still up in the air," along with platforms. But the game will be playable at PlayStation Experience 2015, which runs from Dec. 5-6 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
